New impacts on soybean growers

The effect of untreated fields is getting more costly:

  • A 1,000-acre untreated soybean farm with a 50 bu/A potential yield will see a 15% yield loss, or 7.5bu lost.
  • Multiply 7.5bu by $12/A = $90/A. With 1,000 acres, that’s a total loss of $90,000.

How we got here

Global demand for soybeans is at an all-time high, primarily driven by China’s consumption. With favorable production economics, growers are investing more in soybean crops to maximize their revenue opportunities. However, fields left untreated can be robbed of 15% of their yields by common diseases.

Maximum root nodulation, rhizobial nitrogen fixation, and root nutrient uptake.

Fact: Rhizobia are soil bacteria that fix nitrogen once they’re established inside your soybean root nodules.
Fact: Without vigorous roots and N-fixation, the plants’ health and potential yield are both limited.

Solution: Use a seed treatment with the right rhizobial inoculant. It can prevent your soybeans from being starved of the nitrogen they need, and the results can make you an extra $25 to 35 per acre.

Weeds can germinate before seedling soybeans. It’s a classic case of, “Give ‘em an inch and they’ll take a mile.”

You know that failing to control weeds at germination and emergence can cost you. But did you know how much?

Weedy fields can inhibit your ability to expand acres in the future, with a loss of up to $60 per acre of profit. For every 1,000 acres, that’s $60,000. Even a conservative $30 per acre of profit lost, that’s $30,000 for every 1,000 acres not going into your pocket.

Talk about vulnerable: The cotyledons are susceptible to a variety of stresses, including weed, insect and disease pressures.

Any of these can severely damage or destroy them, and the loss of both cotyledons can result in up to 10% yield reduction.

Breaking of the hypocotyl will result in the death of the soybean seedling.

Based on your yield of X bu/A last year on your Y-acre farm at $3.50/bu, you could lose $Z (0.1 x X x Y x $3.50 = $Z).

Weed pressure during vegetative stages can decrease yield.

When a soybean plant doesn’t have to compete with weeds for nutrition, it will branch profusely and increase in plant density. But with competition, it’s a different matter. One pigweed plant per row meter can reduce yield by 25%.

Let’s say you have a 1,000-acre farm averaging 40 bu/A.

With weeds reducing yield by 25%, you could lose 10 bu/A, for a loss of $100,000.

Post-harvest fact 1:

The ideal moisture content for your beans at harvest and for storage is 13%.

Post-harvest fact 2:

Before they can reach less than 15% moisture, soybeans need 5 to 10 days of drying weather after R8.

Insights and actions:
  • When winter annuals develop in your fields, they can cause major weed challenges. Plus they can allow for increased insect pressure in the spring.
  • When you eliminate winter annuals in the fall with an herbicide application, you can see an increase in spring soil moisture levels—somewhere between 6% and 14%.
  • You also may see the soil temperature rise by up to 5 degrees, allowing for earlier planting.
  • Earlier planting can mean increased yield—and delayed planting just the opposite.
A Midwest soybean operation example:

Delay of soybean planting after May 5 in this region can cause losses of 1/3 bushel per acre per day. With a 7-day delay, you stand to lose bushels at the rate of 7 x number of acres x 0.33. And at $10/bu, you can calculate your dollar loss from the delay.
