How we got here

U.S. corn production has been at an all-time high, driven by new technologies and corresponding all-time-high prices. As the industry reaches the point of balancing supply and demand, commodity prices are normalizing. Now a corn grower needs to maximize bushels per acre to offset input costs. This is a mind shift for corn growers, who previously maximized bushels per acre to capitalize on record high prices.

Seed loves soil. But not for long

The longer the seed is in the soil, the more exposure it has to soil-borne disease pressure.

Cold and wet conditions aren’t good for humans. And definitely not good for plants.

Cold, wet soils can cause uneven emergence, resulting in unrecoverable yield loss.

Uneven stand count can result in costly, unrecoverable yield losses. How costly?

7 to 15 lost bushels per acre. Using a moderate 10 lost bushels/A, if you farm 5,000 acres, that’s 50,000 bushels lost.

Maximum yield potential is locked in. Lost yield is unrecoverable.

How a little broadleaf weed only 4 inches tall can make a grown farmer cry:

A quick recap of the corn dry-down rates you can expect, on average:
  • During favorable drying weather (sunny and breezy): about 3/4 to 1% per day
  • Early to mid October: 1/4 to 3/4% per day
  • Late October: 1/4 to 1/2% per day
  • Mid-November: 0 to 1/4% per day
  • Late November: negligible drying rates
What pops up every fall and shoots down yield expectations by spring?

Winter annuals. First, they can cause increased insect pressure in spring. Second, they can reduce spring soil moisture. And worst of all, they can delay spring planting, which can cost you plenty. Killing winter annuals in this fall season with an herbicide application prevents loss and protects yield.

What kind of improvements in spring soil moisture and temperature can you see when you control winter annuals?

Big ones: Soil moisture increases of 6 to 14%. And soil temp increases by up to 5 degrees F. And that allows for earlier planting, which is usually money in the bank.

The potential cost of factors like winter annuals causing delays in spring planting is steep.

Example: Midwest corn growers may lose up to 1% of the total yield for each day after May 15 they must wait to plant.
